Paschal Candlesticks
The paschal candle (or Easter candle) is blessed and lit on the Easter Vigil. The flame of the paschal candle represents the saving light of Jesus Christ, and calls to mind the pillars of cloud and fire that led the Israelites through the desert to the Promised Land. Just as the Israelites followed God's light as it led them out of slavery, so the light of Christ leads us out of the darkness of sin. The paschal candle remains lit for all liturgical services during the Easter season. It is lit during the Sacrament of Baptism as a symbol of the Holy Spirit and the grace receive din baptism. the flame of the paschal candle is used to light a baptismal candle that is presented to the newly baptized member of the congregation. The paschal candle is also used during funerals; it stands near the casket of the deceased, its flame serving as a reminder of Christ's promise of resurrection.
