The use of sanctuary lamps dates back to biblical times. A constantly burning lamp placed in a religious community's sacred spaces is used by both Jews and Christians to honor God and to serve as a reminder of His presence. In synagogues, a sanctuary lamp, also called the 'eternal flame,' is kept burning in front of the ark containing the synagogue's Torah scrolls. In Catholic Churches, the sanctuary lamps is lite whnever the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle, and kept burning as long as the Holy Eucharist is present. In this way it serves to both honor Christ and to alert those in the church to His presence in the Tabernacle. Other Christian churches use sanctuary lamps as a reminder of God's presence, and as a symbol of the saving light of Jesus Christ that illuminates a world darkened by sin.
