As the patron saint of Policemen, battle, mariners and sailors, St. Michael medals are often given to those in some branch of law enforcement. Michael is also invoked for protection against evil, because he with his archangels is described in the Book of Revelation (12.7) as having defeated Satan and throwing him down to earth. Wearing a St. Michael medal is a reminder of the divine aid available to us when we pray.
