Called 'the Voyager' or 'the Navigator', St Brendan is renowned for his many missionary journeys by ship, one of which lasted seven years! This famous son of Ireland was born in County Kerry, and educated in Counties Limerick and Galway under the tutelage of Abbess St Ita and Abbott St Jarlath. After becoming a monk and a priest, Brendan himself became an abbott, eventually founding many successful monasteries in Ireland. Biographical sketches speak of his governing a community of three thousand monks, and it is said that his rule of life was dictated to him by an angel.
A desire to spread the good news inspired Brendan and sixty companions to sail to several missionary fields. including the Scottish Isles and the 'Isles of the Blessed' (believed to be North America); not surprisingly, he is designated as the patron saint of sailors, navigators, mariners, seafarers and yachtsmen. His feast day is May 16.
This sterling silver St Brendan medal is about the size of a quarter, measuring about one inch in diameter. The front of the medal features the image of Brendan cradling a sailing ship in his right arm and elevating a cross with his left, bordered by his name in easy-to-read block lettering. The back is blank, ideal for engraving a name or significant date. The 24 inch curb-style stainless steel chain is rhodium-coated to preserve its brilliant finish; for most, this length easily slips over the head. The 'endless' design insures durability, helping to prevent medal loss due to breakage. An appropriate gift to commemorate a First Communion or Confirmation! Attractively packaged in a green velvet hinged box.
