Prescription for finding lost items (spoken fervently, with various degrees of panic and frustration): 'Dear St Anthony, I pray, bring it back without delay'; or the more informal - 'Tony, Tony, look around; something's lost and must be found.' St Anthony is the hope of the absent-minded and the forgetful - here's why: Anthony had borrowed a valuable psalter which he believed he misplaced. Unknown to him, a young novice had stolen it and was escaping with the goods. As Anthony prayed for its recovery, the young man was terrorized by a menacing vision and rushed back quickly to return the book.
Anthony's gifts, however, include much more: his eloquent and persuasive preaching, drawing many to the faith and causing even the most serious sinners to repent; an extensive knowledge of Scripture which resulted in his appointment as lector in theology; a great love for the poor which brought about great social reforms in Padua. Anthony healed a man's severed leg, restored life to another so he could testify at a murder trial, and when he preached in the rain, his listeners would remain dry! St Anthony is patron of searchers of lost things, the poor, travelers and Portugal. His feast day is June 13.
This penny-sized sterling silver medal features St Anthony cradling the Christ Child, Who is believed to have appeared to Anthony; he also holds lilies, a sign of eternal life.
