Iconography grew out of Eastern (Byzantine) Christianity and many would say reached its highest point in the Russian Orthodox Church. In the Eastern Church today, icon art has sacramental overtones and is part of the Liturgy. This icon beautifully depicts St. Michael the Archangel patron saint of battle and police officers.
