A fine quality reproduction of this Saint Benedict icon measures 6 X 10 inches and comes mounted on solid walnut, protected by a thin film of lacquer and hangs from a keyhole cut-out on the back of the wood.

The iconographer is Sister Mary Charles McGough, O.S.B, from the Monastery of St Scholastica in Duluth, MN.

The origins of this image of Saint Benedict of Nursia tell of the 'type' of holy man he was. Benedict is presented as a lawgiver, a shepherd, a wonder-worker, a prophet and an ascetic. Benedict lived in Italy from about 480 to 547 AD. He was not the founder of Christian monasticism, but he made an enormous contribution to it by writing his 'Rule for Monks' which is still used by a great many monasteries. This icon would make a perfect gift for anyone who tries to live the Benedictine way!
