Believing themselves to be barren, St. Anne and her husband Joachim prayed to God to give them a child. At last, an angel appeared to Anne, assuring her that she would conceive and that her child would 'be blessed by all the world.' St. Anne promised to dedicate her child to the service of God. That child was Mary, the mother of Jesus. St. Anne is the patron saint of mothers and grandmothers, pregnancy and childless women.
