The Definition of Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is defined as the first day of Lent in many western Christian churches, including in the Roman Catholic church. Eastern Orthodox churches generally do not observe Ash Wednesday. It always occurs 46 days before Easter, so it is not always on the same date each year. Lent itself originated from biblical stories of Jesus living in the desert for 40 days, constantly tempted by satan; hence, Lent has become a time of sacrifice and Ash Wednesday is the ceremony that begins the season. It is not a holy day of obligation for Catholics, but it is a very well attended mass since the ceremony contains great meaning for many.

The Definition of Ash Wednesday Explained Further

Ash Wednesday is given that name because ashes are placed on the foreheads of congregants, in the shape of a cross. When the Catholic priest puts the ashes upon someone, he will say, “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Ashes have been used since ancient times as a way to both express general grief and also direct sorrow for sins. The bible references ashes in this way in Job, Maccabees, and several other places. Having a cross on one’s forehead is an outward sign of repentance, particularly poignant at the culmination of Lent. Using the ashes in this way on this particular day dates back to the 10th century. While Catholics almost always receive ashes in the church, other denominations may celebrate it in other places - often on the street, in workplaces, or in schools.

Ashes can be purchased from Catholic religious supplies stores. The ashes are created by burning the palm leaves from the previous palm Sunday. It is rare these days for any church to burn their own palms due to town/city ordinances and safety issues. A Catholic religious supply store can ensure the ashes are reputable without the hassle. Even a small packet of ashes will serve a huge congregation! Catholic religious supplies stores also sell ash dispensers and plates.
