Mourning at some time or other becomes a part of each person's life. In her book, Catholic & Mourning a Loss, Mauryeen O'Brien, OP states that unless we completely and sufficiently mourn that loss we will not be able to successfully go on with our lives. One way to do so is through "Catholic prayers and ritual which can bring us a sense of balance and peace, a way to remember people who have brought beauty and meaning to our lives". She feels that a person experiencing grief faces five challenges which then present 5 opportunities to help the person move through the grieving experience. As an example, one of the challenges is that "our life will be changed because of our loss". The corresponding opportunity is that "We can realize that change can be an opportunity for newness and growth". Facing a loss can force a person to evaluate his or her spiritual life and thus become more aware of the presence of a loving God in that life. In Catholic & Mourning a Loss, O'Brien feels the Catholic faith, with its emphasis on forgiveness, healing and prayer, can help in this spiritual process. Catholic & Mourning a Loss is often used by grief counselors or in grief support groups and comes highly recommended. It could be of great use to priests, ministers or parish pastoral care personnel.
