The Breath of the Soul has author, Joan Chittister, reflecting on ways to make prayer the very breath of the soul of the reader. Subtitled "Reflections on Prayer", Chittister maintains that the person doing the praying has to bring something to the prayer which includes an open heart, self-knowledge, and a willingness to be open to God even when all we can see is darkness. Each chapter of Breath of the Soul takes a quality about which we may wish to pray, includes a quote from a spiritual person relating to that quality, goes on with a reflection about prayer and that quality and has a mantra for the one praying to use to keep that quality in the front of the mind of the person. The chapter on "Abandonment" has a quote from Thomas Merton which reads "Pure love and prayer are learned in the hour when prayer has become impossible and your heart has turned to stone". The reflection talks about feeling abandoned and how to pray in this situation and the mantra to be used says "Great God, keep my spirit alive and growing into you more and more by the day". Breath of the Soul has 42 short chapters covering topics from prayer and action to humility to change and will be a helpful aide for anyone going through a dry spell in their daily prayer or for anyone who is looking for a deeper exploration into what prayer can be in their life.
