Dr. John Bergsma is a renowned biblical scholar who teaches at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. His book, Bible Basics for Catholics A New Picture of Salvation History, is based the a popular introductory course he teaches there entitled "Principles of Biblical Study" and provides the reader with information he presents in his class. He discusses the Bible as "covenant" not only as in marriage or adoption but in our relationship with God. "God is all about commitment and love that lasts "till death do us part" and beyond, because not even death parts us from God". Bergsma also talks about "mediators" or persons who represent groups of people involved in a covenant like Abraham, David and Jesus. And he talks about mountaintops as this is where the covenants in the Bible occur and is where we are closer to God.

Bible Basics for Catholics has simple pencil stick illustrations done by Bergsma himself to help clarify the ideas he is presenting and to present key points. The back of the book has questions to help the reader delve deeper into the points presented in the book and may be used on an individual level or in group discussions.
