"By encouraging engagement with the modern world and a refocusing of traditional teaching, the Second Vatican Council brought new life to the practice of Catholicism". On the 50th anniversary of Vatican II, people seem to be once more interested in looking at what happened when Pope John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council. Vatican II The Essential Texts contains the key documents of the Council. The book starts with an introduction by Pope Benedict XVI which is a speech he gave to the Roman Curia in 2005 where he discusses the question "What has been the result of the Council?". Then James Carroll, who feels " the texts of the Council cannot be fully appreciated outside of the context out of which they came" gives a summary of what that context was which includes the important historical events of Hiroshima and Auschwitz. In looking at what had happened and was happening in the world, the reader gets a better idea of why the Council was called and the issues they were trying to address within society and the Church at that time. To further aid the reader, each document has a brief historical preface written by Edward Hahnenberg who is a professor of Church history at the Gregorian University in Rome.
