St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia was a virgin and is one of the most famous Roman martyrs of the third century where she was sentenced to death after she was caught burying the bodies of martyrs. St. Patrick's Guild has a St. Cecilia statue, a St. Cecilia medal, a St. Cecilia pendant and a St. Cecilia necklace all of which can be given as a gift on a special occasion to one named Cecilia, to a musician or to one who has chosen Cecilia as her Confirmation saint name.

So why did she become the patron of musicians, hymns, poets and composers? Apparently during her pagan wedding ceremony she did not hear the secular music of the celebration but, instead, experienced the sounds of angels singing. She sang to the Lord in her heart which gave her the courage to remain true to her faith. She has come to symbolize the central role of music in liturgy and her feast day is the occasion for concerts and musical festivals. Give a St. Cecilia statue, a St. Cecilia medal, a St. Cecilia pendant or a St. Cecilia necklace to the special person you know named Cecilia, the family member who is a musician or poet or to the one you know who has chosen Cecilia as her Confirmation name.
