The author of the book Flying in the Face of Tradition, Br. Louis De Thomasis, feels that the Catholic Church is experiencing "a crisis of confidence" and that the solution to the crisis is to return to the Church's historic belief in tradition as a source of ongoing revelation and renewal. A Christian Brother and former president of St. Mary's University in Minnesota, Br. DeThomasis states that he is not just criticizing the Church and others but himself as well for being "insensitive, for closed-minded arrogance and for being overly protective of himself and other church members" when it comes to dealing with some of the issues in the Church today, one of those issues being ordination of women. Flying in the Face of Tradition talks about rebuilding communion in the face of the widening gap between the hierarchical church and the lay members by the Church recognizing and embracing globalization, diversity and democratization. Br. DeThomasis feels it is not only his right but his duty to present these ideas as he feels the institutional church has to change quickly and fundamentally to recover its credibility and authority. This is a courageous book by a man who loves his Church.
