Pope Francis is becoming known internationally for his more progressive way of leading the Catholic Church. Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Garry Wills, feels Pope Francis is the right man at the right time to move the Church forward. Wills uses his book The Future of the Catholic Church with Pope Francis to show that the Catholic Church may act like it never changes but it does change although that is slow to happen. He focuses less on Pope Francis and more on the history of the Church "and specifically on the many ways in which the Church has erred, backtracked, prevaricated and groaningly inched its way forward into the modern age".

Wills divides The Future of the Catholic Church into sections to discuss different areas where changes have occurred such as the history of the sacrament of Confession, the comings and goings of Latin, the church as a monarchy. He feels Pope Francis is the man to move the Church forward because Pope Francis seems to be more in touch with the ordinary people. Wills tries to show in this book how the myth that the Church is unchanging is wrong and that this myth has "no basis in history or reason or the Gospel". The book is a hardcover book with 288 pages.
