Author Josef Pieper, in his book Leisure: The Basis of Culture, feels that leisure is the first foundation of any culture. He defines leisure as "an attitude of the mind and a condition of the soul that fosters a capacity to perceive the reality of the world". He points out that the Greeks and medieval Europeans understood the great value and importance of leisure. It is extremely important to religious development as "religion can be born only in leisure which allows for the contemplation of the nature of God".

Leisure: The Basis of Culture was published 50 years ago but is even more relevant now. He talked years ago of how labor and work had gotten rid of leisure and it is even more true today. In the book he says that he feels that "if we don't get back to leisure, the art of silence and insight and the ability for non-activity, we will destroy our culture and ourselves". The Philosophical Art, also by Pieper is also included in this book.
