In Love and Responsibility, Saint Pope John Paul II writes in defense of the Catholic traditions as regards family life and sexual morality. He points out the while sciences like biology, psychology and sociology can provide valuable information on particular aspects of relations between the sexes, a full understanding can be obtained only by study of the human person as a whole.

He contrasts two different types of relationships. The first is personalistic where the well being of a partner is of overriding importance to the other. This is versus the utilitarian viewpoint where the partner is an object for use so there is no possibility of fulfillment or happiness. Throughout the book he appeals to ordinary human experiences while stressing the presence of God in the relationship and what God intends love to be. The conclusions in Love and Responsibilitycoincide with the traditional teachings of the Church which invoke scriptural authority. The book is written in such a way as to be appealing to Catholics and non-Catholics alike. It also includes an article the explains more fully the dynamic of self-giving spousal love.
