This little book is a wonderful way to introduce children to the real "St. Nicholas". He was so noted for his generosity that he became the model for our secular notion of Santa Claus. The booklet entitled Nicholas of Myra Giver of Many Gifts gives the reader a biography of Nicholas who became bishop of Myra and relates some of the stories that are used to illustrate his generosity and good deeds. Nicholas of Myra is part of a series of six books for children about the saints of Christmas. The front of the booklet has a calendar showing the days on which the feasts of the six saints are celebrated including St. Nicholas whose feast day is December 6. After the death of Bishop Nicholas when people told stories of his generosity and wonderful deeds they started calling him St. Nicholas. His joyful spirit of giving is seen in the secular image of him as Santa Claus. The back of the Nicholas of Myra booklet has a short helpful glossary of words taken from some of the stories which are told in the booklet and which may be unfamiliar to children who are reading the book for the first time. With the beautiful illustrations which are included, Nicholas of Myra will be a book you enjoy reading with your children during the holiday season to give them a more complete view of who the man we celebrate as St. Nicholas really was.
