Pope John Paul II is considered to be one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century and historically was the first non-Italian pope elected in 400 years. On April 27, 2014 he is to be canonized as a saint. This framed picture has been created to commemorate that occasion. It measures 13x16 inches and comes in a stately gold frame. Pope John Paul II is recognized as helping end communism in his country Poland and then, eventually, in the rest of Europe. He was one of the most traveled popes and in doing so did much to ease tensions and improve relations with other religions. Pope John Paul II was instrumental in forming the encyclical "Humanae Vitae" regarding abortion and birth control. He is quoted as saying he wanted to transform the Catholic Church "to place his Church at the heart of a new religious alliance that would bring together Jews, Muslims and Catholics in a great religious armada". Through popular and continued usage he is coming to be referred to as "John Paul the Great" although he is also affectionately called "Uncle" especially in Poland. October 22 has been designated as his feast day.
