In 1941 Pope Pius XII instigated a secret dig under St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The Fisherman's Tomb The True Story of the Vatican's Secret Search, by John O'Neill is the story of that dig. An early Christian grave was discovered and a 75 year quest was begun to discover if this was the long-lost burial place of the Apostle Peter. St. Peter was executed by Nero and assumed to be buried on Vatican Hill but his tomb was lost to history. After the discovery of the grave, an archeological dig of a lifetime was funded by a wealthy Texas oilman and led by an Italian female archeologist.

The Fisherman's Tomb takes you along on this exciting journey and explains why it is felt the grave was actually that of St. Peter. Fr. Dwight Longenecker, priest, author and speaker highly recommends the book and describes it this way "The discovery of a second century necropolis and the confusing jumble of artifacts, architecture and bones combines with power struggles, egomaniac priests and a terrier like Italian woman archeologist of astounding genius."
