The Time is Now A Call to Uncommon Courage is Sr. Joan Chittister's new book taking on the "societal forces that oppress and silence the sacred voices among us." using the wisdom of the prophets both of old and today. A prophet is "one who speaks truth to a culture of lies" and Chittister is asking us "Are we prophets?" She talks of how in today's society she feels we have three choices; quit the road going somewhere we don't want to go, surrender to forces of resistance that obstruct our ever step towards wholeness or refuse to accept the moral deterioration of the present and insist on celebrating the coming of an unknown, but surely holier, future.

Through chapters entitled Risk, Paradox, Authenticity, Wisdom and others, she uses teachings from prophets that came before us and modern day prophets to illustrate saying "no" to immoral practices today and "yes" to those things that make the world a better place for everyone. Her book dedication reads "who forever seek the truth, defend the weak, bring the peace, and always, always, always stand up to protest injustice - it is to you - that I dedicate this book". In our world as we find it today, The Time is Now suggests that "As prophets today we are called to make the world a better place for all, to bring to life the fullness of Creation for all, to help bring about equality, safety, security and compassion for all." Are we prophets?
