Being a caretaker or loved one of someone who is dying can be one of the hardest experiences through which a person may have to go. Margrit Banta has spent many years in pastoral ministry to the terminally ill and in the course of her work found that there was no available resource for caregivers to use when they find themselves struggling with this situation. Her book, What Do I Say? Talking and Praying With Someone Who is Dying, offers some help, guidance and encouragement to the caregiver while giving a "personal and pastoral" approach to being with someone who is dying. She discusses answering questions when necessary, listening attentively, and praying with the person when it is desired. She suggests that while it is important to talk about practical things such as a will or DNR orders, the most important things to do are to be lovingly and attentively present and be willing to just spend time listening. What Do I Say? offers suggestions based on the author's many years of experience which may help being with a terminally ill person become the most comfortable and compassionate situation for all concerned that it can be under the circumstances.
