Many times people with disabilities are not finding their needs met in our churches and parishes either physically or spiritually. In her book Handbook for Adaptive Catechesis, the author Michele E. Chronister addresses these issues including how to identify people with special needs, recruiting effective teachers and involving parents. She suggests turning the focus around and not looking so much at how the parish can be open to helping those with disabilities but how they, with their God-given talents and gifts, can help and be a more significant part of the parish. By using this viewpoint, the person with special needs can be made to feel much more a part of the parish and parish activities. Handbook for Adaptive Catechesis includes a helpful chapter on the components of special needs ministry, looks at parish and personal needs and has a chapter addressing preparing persons with special needs for the sacraments. As Chronister says in the book "Those with special needs and disabilities need the church's help but, more importantly, we need their help. We need them to remind us that God works in incredible ways through those the world finds to be little and weak".
