Suffering is found everywhere in the world today. In his classic book, Wounded Healer, Henri Nouwen contends that "ministers are called to identify the suffering in their own hearts and make that recognition the starting point of their service". Many ministers are questioning whether they are making a difference in the suffering found in the world today. Nouwen wrote Wounded Healer to encourage them and emphasize that any difference in suffering will be made when the minister relates the suffering of the world or the person he or she is working with to the suffering that has occurred in his or her own life. Four areas of suffering are discussed in relationship to the minister and they are the condition of a suffering world, a suffering generation, a suffering human and a suffering minister. Wounded Healer is not a handbook for ministers but rather addresses the image Nouwen felt arose in all these areas, the image of the wounded healer, and tries to articulate the problem ministers encounter in the world today as they try to address the problem of suffering. "In our own woundedness, we can become a source of life for others." The text of the book has been carefully updated for the reader of today.
